Flamingo is a members-only gay disco on the corner of Houston and Broadway in lower Manhattan. Today, the chic SoHo neighborhood boasts luxury apartments and flagship boutiques. Still, in the late 1970s, when the city was skirting bankruptcy, and violent crime was at an all-time high, it was the birthplace of the gay club scene, one that has miraculously survived for over four decades.
Flamingo launched the New York Black Party, a sister party to the White Party, which celebrated everything light and bright about music, and of course, everyone wore white. The Black Party, in contrast, celebrated music’s darkness and mystery. It was always leather-friendly and permanently more promiscuous.
At the time, many clubs in cities on both coasts had Black Parties and White Parties (the most famous White Party still happens every year in Palm Springs). The name “Black Party” wasn’t trademarked back then.
The Black Party’s annual rites of spring celebration, held this year on April 6, has firmly established itself as LGBT New York’s biggest and most intense nightlife event of the year. It remains consistently & unique after 40 legendary years, a secretive and eagerly awaited one-night-only, no-holds-barred, nocturnal carnival.
The devoted tribe, which hails from three continents, numbers around 4000 people. Everyone is eager to remove their winter layers, inhibitions, and identities. The Black Party’s order of the night is to dress up, dance, and enjoy yourself in this carefully crafted alternate universe of fetish, fantasy, and fun.

Saint At Large has earned a reputation as the leading homosexual producer of nightlife entertainment, known and admired internationally for its ambitious productions, cutting-edge innovations, and spectacular staging, inspired by its legendary namesake nightclub, The Saint (1980–1988).
The Black Party is one of gay New York’s most-attended, longest-running, and most anticipated events and is regarded as the “Father of All Large Circuit Events.” The party is still one of the world’s most significant gay dance events, with over 5,000 people. It is renowned for cutting-edge productions, imaginative staging, international DJ superstars, world-class performers, and infamous “weird live performances” worldwide.
The New York Expo Center is the location of the event. The New York Expo Center has an incredible 10-acre venue space right on the East River Waterfront. The interior size is 90,000 square feet, with a 60,000 square foot primary event space. It is the five boroughs’ largest permanent venue with no closing time requirement.
