One possible reason for the name of the sport could be it’s the Old English word ” cryce” (or ” cricc“) which means a staff or crutch. The Samuel Johnson Dictionary, he discovered that cricket was derived by referring to ” cryce, Saxon, a stick”. The word “cryce” is Saxon and means stick. Old French, the word ” criquet” could have meant an esoteric stick or club.
